It's official, and it's a boy: The new royal heir

It's official. Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge are now proud parents, as of Monday, July 22. And the baby is a boy.

The sex of the baby was unknown until today, although there had been speculation that it would be a girl. It had, in fact, been hoped that the baby would be a girl, as with changes to the rules regarding succession to the monarchy, she would have been the first baby girl that would inherit the throne even if her birth was followed by the birth of a boy.

According to Buckingham Palace officials, the baby came into the world at precisely 4:24 PM GMT. The boy weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces.

The new baby become third in line to the British throne, after Prince Charles and William.

As had been expected, the baby's sex was revealed via a birth document transferred from the hospital to the palace.
