Police examine possible Aaron Hernandez connection in 2012 dual homicides

Could the murder case involving Aaron Hernandez, former New England Patriot, be just the tip of the iceberg? It's possible. Sources said on Thursday that authorities are investigating Hernandez for two murders in 2012.

However, there has been no official statement on the earlier murders.

The details on the earlier murders are as follows:

On July 15, 2012 Daniel Jorge Correia de Abreu, 29, and Safiro Teixeira Furtado, 28 were killed when the BMW sedan they were in was ambushed with a hail of bullets at the corner of Shawmut Avenue and Herald Street in Boston's South End. There were three friens in the back seat; Furtado was in the passenger seat while Abreu was driving.

One back-seat passenger was shot three times in the arm, but survived. The other two were unharmed.

Witnesses said they saw a grey SUV-style motor vehicle with Rhode Island plates fleeing the scene after the men were shot. Reportedly, the drive-by shooting occurred just hours after Hernandez was witnessed in a nightclub altercation of some sort.

Hernandez spent the night in jail after being charged with first-degree murder and weapons offenses. Prosecutors claim he "orchestrated" the execution of Odin Lloyd, 27, a semi-pro football player and a friend of Hernandez's from Boston.

A second man, Carlos Ortiz of Bristol, Conn., has also been arrested in connection with the Lloyd killing. To this point, though, officials have thus far not explained Ortiz's role.

Hernandez was denied bail.
