'That’s What She Said': Steve Carell to appear on 'Office' finale (or not)

Just a few days after Greg Daniels, executive producer of "The Office" said that Steve Carell would not make an appearance in the May 16 series finale, the news came on Tuesday. Surprise: Michael Scott, Dunder Mifflin's old boss, will in fact return for the concluding episode, after all.

Or will he?

TvLine.com says the answer is yes. Multiple denials by Daniels says no. Meanwhile, fellow "Office" star Rainn Wilson just muddied the waters.

Steve Carell was spotted with his former castmates from "The Office" at the wrap party for the finale and was filmed by fellow Office star Rainn Wilson, who plays Dwight Schrute. However, Carell was seen not in character, though Wilson referred to Carell as a “secret cast member.” The embedded video shows an excerpt from the wrap party.

What of Daniels' most recent denial? In a conference call with reporters last week, Daniels said,
I think Steve felt, and I agree, that the "Goodbye, Michael" episode was his goodbye and he didn’t want to overshadow the ending that all the other characters deserved.
How can Carell stil appear? According to TVline.com, he can still do so if his appearance does not "overshadow" the finale.

In other words, and as unnamed sources said, the return of Michael Scott is a cameo more than anything else.

When we last saw Michael Scott on the show, he was leaving Pennsylvania to begin his new life with his fiancée, Holly, played by Amy Ryan, in Colorado.

The series finale of "The Office" is slightly more than a week away, on May 16.
