Pratt has had dramatic turns, too. He recently bulked up to appear as a Navy Seal in the Oscar-nominated film, "Zero Dark Thirty."
The film is reportedly based on the 2008 reboot of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" comic book, which first debuted in 1969 with a different team of heroes.
In addition to Star-Lord, the 2008 team features Rocket Raccoon, a laser gun wielding -- you guessed it, raccoon; Groot, a plant monster from outer space; Gamora, a female martial arts master; and the super-powered Drax the Destroyer. There are additional members, but these are the ones expected to be in the film.
Pratt is, as of now, the only character cast in the film.
Star-Lord is Peter Quill, the son of a human mother and alien father. He eventually becomes a NASA astronaut, and gains his powers from an entity called the Master of the Sun. Wikipedia says:
Star-Lord is a master strategist and problem solver who is an expert in close quarter combat, various human and alien firearms, battle techniques and has an extensive knowledge on various alien customs, societies and cultures, as well as various knowledge about cosmic abstracts such as Oblivion.Guardians of the Galaxy is set to release on Aug. 1, 2014.
As Star-Lord, Peter Quill wears a suit that grants augmented strength and durability and the ability to travel through space. The character also uses an "Element Gun," a special meta-pistol capable of projecting one of the four elements (air, earth, fire and water). Star-Lord also shares a psychic link with his sentient space vessel, "Ship."
