It turns out that four women were jaywalking, and the officer had them come over. Things escalated, and he was trying to handcuff the first woman (a 19-year-old) when the second one, a 17-year-old, came over. It is clear from the video that the 17-year-old pushed the officer (as pictured above). At that point, the officer punches the 17-year-old in the face.
Undoubtedly, there's going to be arguments over the incident, and also undoubtedly, there will be "race" brought into the picture. The Seattle police have responded to the incident, and issued this statement.
"You obviously have to take into context everything that occurred from the point that the officer did make contact with the individuals until the situation ended. As I said before, we have some concerns about the tactics the officer used and employed at the time. Again, we did feel what occurred did deserve a review by the Office of Professional Accountability."Watch the video, and decide for yourself.

Just by going on what the video shows I see nothing wrong. The officer was trying to detain or arrest the one girl when the other comes along and gets her freind away from the officer and then she pushes him. Maybe he could have handled it in a different way because she is a female but why should he have to. She interfered with his job and pushed him.
Seems like PD would have better thing to do than stopping four women for jaywalking.
But if your a weak officer, who can't handle tougher crimes, then you probably feel even better arresting and punching women.

I'm Canadian so maybe I've been brought up different. When I see a "man"? punch a woman I would probably give this creep in uniform a good beating. My father was a cop for 27 yrs. and he would have beat this sorry excuse for a peace officer. Come to Canada shithead try that here we are still a free country.

If it were me I would have reacted the same way. It looked like she was going for his face. If you are told to turn around so you can be cuffed, why get belligerent? He was not harming her but trying to arrest her so why would her friend attack the cop?
The cop should not have hit her! He could have used mace, take down, or restraint.

What do people expect? Treat the police with respect, you'd get respect in return. If you're upset about the stop for jaywalking, file a complaint at the precinct. If you think you can get out of the situation by escalating violence, you think that the police will say 'oh my, this person really doesn't want to be arrested- I better let him(her) go' wouldn't EVERY criminal do the same? IT'S THE POLICE'S JOB TO SUBDUE VIOLENT CRIMINALS! THEY CARRY WEAPONS!! IT'S AGAINST THE LAW TO BATTER A POLICE OFFICER! Maybe the jaywalking thing is a bit mickeymouse, but just judging from what I watched on video- I think the girls were in the wrong, and have no problem with the officer's conduct.

So many people complaining about the cop getting too aggressive about jaywalking. It goes both ways people. Why did the women have to start getting in to cops face over a simple jaywalking citation? Also, the guy with the camera, do you think it is a coincidence the he didn't record the event from the very beginning?
