Teenager Hospitalized After Branding

Well, this just emphasizes the fact that teenagers, despite what they may tell you, don't know much about the world and about what might be a good or bad idea. A Ukiah teenager has been hospitalized after being branded. The kicker: he asked his friends to do it to him.

According to Mendocino County Sheriff's Capt. Kurt Smallcomb, the unnamed 17-year-old, a senior at Ukiah High School, had asked his friends to burn a metal star into his chest, feeling that it would show pride at being from Northern California.

Look, tattoos are bad enough, as they are hard to remove, but a brand? That would be there forever. I can only guess the branding iron idea was cheaper (free) as opposed to a tattoo.

On Wednesday, students gathered in the parking lot of a shopping center during their lunch break, heated the branding iron with a butane torch and pressed it into the teen's chest.

Unfortunately, they apparently went a little too deep, and immediately (?) recognized the issue, and took the boy to the hospital. Authorities say the students who branded the boy may face prosecution.

I'm not sure why. For being as stupid as the kid?

I come from a farm family, I never once, thought of getting branded. I thought about a lot of other things. But, being branded was not in my thinking. How could you be a friend and hold a hot iron to the chest of a friend? Better look at these friends they sound like they could be killers, when they grow-up.

Branding and scarification is available at some tattoo/body modification places. Not completely unheard of, or some crazy thing this kid thought up. They probably saw it in some tattoo magazine. I don't think his friends should be jailed, just hit upside the head for being stupid enough to go along with it.

I know the kid. A lot of kids at our kid are stupid, but he actually made the brand in welding class. A lot of kids from around here actually get branded, and quite a few are a nor-cal star. I also know the people who actually did it, and they aren't bad either. The two kids who held him down were star football players, and neither of them are "cruel." However, neither are they smart. They shouldn't be jailed. Now, however, the kid who got branded is getting charged with delinquency. Not only was he hurt and humiliated, now arrested. When it happened (I also happened to witness it, like most of my school), people were puking, running, passing out, and crawling through people trying to get away. I saw our toughest football player pass out cold. I think this is a good example to others, even if it was at the cost of someone else.
The worst part was the pictures and videos that were going around after lunch... It was just a gaping hole, with a rib sticking out...
