California "Smoke-Free Cars with Minors" Law Goes into Effect

One of the new laws that went into effect January 1st in California is one you'd better remember, both for your children's sake and your wallet: the CHP says it will not offer a grace period. Moving or stopped, you can no longer smoke in the same car as a minor, whether you are the driver or a passenger.

The "Smoke-Free Cars with Minors" law carries a $100 fine, but it will be a secondary offense, meaning officers cannot pull a car over strictly for smoking; there has to be another infraction involved before the car can be pulled over.

"Passengers, especially youth, are exposed to dangerous levels of toxic air contaminants when someone is smoking in a car," Paul Knepprath, vice president for government relations for the American Lung Association of California, said in a statement.

Arkansas and Louisiana have similar laws.

It sure is ironic how the tobacco companies are not required to make a non toxic cigarette. Oh ,but that means the states would not profit from all these laws that are bound to be broke. Instead of getting to the root of the problem the states just try to figure out a way to make it work in there favor. It is all about the mean green- not the toxic air. BTW-I dont even smoke ,just tired of the crap. Unfair Laws & ALL !

I have to say I think this is a stupid law and I dont smoke. I beleive I read awhile back that the supreme court said your car is an extension of your home so whats next no smoking in your home, bathroom ,garage,or backyard .Where does it stop we are slowly losing our rights to stupid laws and stupid lawmakers where will it end and when will we as adult citizens decide to get rid of the morons that make such MORONIC laws

Let's cut to the chase Mr. Legistrature. If you are really concerned about the effects of cigarette smoking on health you must also be concerned about the effect of alcohol on health directly and indirectly to the people in close proximity as well. Quit pussy footing around. Make the use to tobacco and alcohol products illegal. Oh you can't? Stand to lose too much? That's always the excuse isn't it?

Tobacco smoke is the primary cause of lung cancer. Although nonsmokers can get lung cancer, the risk is about 10 times greater for smokers and is also increased by the number of cigarettes smoked per day. http://www.chantixhome.com/

I am agreeing by this post, but that means the states would not profit from all these laws that are bound to be broke. Instead of getting to the root of the problem the states just try to figure out a way to make it work in their favor.
